Avoid it for:

  1. What awesomeness!

OK, wanted to get another game finished before the New Year, get me ready for my resolution of being more of a completionist. This game seemed a likely candidate and just finished it this moment. What to say?

Quick background. Futuristic setting. You play as Ratchet a Lombax (anthropoid Lynx, great mechanics) and his robot sidekick Clank. They complement each other really well, and it's a pretty neat achievement that both are so likeable when many kid-friendly characters are just plain annoying.

The game looks and sounds great, especially on my new HDTV. Pure fun to play. Great choice of weapons. Love the characters. One of the funniest things I've played - genuinely made me laugh. Had pirates in - always extra points for that!

Lots of big explosions! The joy of smashing things up! But it's not a violent game. Nearly all the enemies are robots and break up into bolts when defeated - which serve as a currency. Great RPG elements of upgrading the character and also his weapons. Very satisfying to max a weapon out. Very forgiving game, which suits me fine. Not hardcore but a helluva lot of fun and a great rollercoaster ride.

Nice mix-up of the gameplay too. Along with the normal stuff there's rail grinding, gyro-cycling, spaceship flying (which even has turret moments with Clank), free-fall & gliding sections using the six-axis controller, decryption, Clank-only sections with little Zoni robots, pirate jigs where you shake your booty, and more! Even the main gameplay has more-puzzley sections (gel-cube jumping, heli-launcher), big boss fights, arena, team back-up and other tricks to keep things feeling new. More surprising still is that each element is actually pretty fun. (Even the spaceship-flying... just...)

I remember my bro had a R&C game on his PS2, and it seems a pretty similar formula in the main. It works though, and it's just great fun. Kept me thoroughly entertained. Heck, it even had a surprisingly ambivalent ending for a seemingly light-hearted game. Awesome.
