Play it for:
* episodes that escalate along an insane story arc.
* wickedly offbeat humour and characters.
* great game to play with a friend.
Avoid it for:
* buggy.
* occasionally frustrating puzzles.

Ok, time for the game reviews i promised. First up is Sam n Max for the wii. Oh, i'm writing this from my DS while watching 40 Year Old Virgin.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, i bought the game for some family fun after the great success of Zack n Wiki - another point n click style adventure. Sadly, my sis didn't get the humour of S&M. But my lil bro and i loved it!
The pluses include the episodic style. This breaks the game into manageable portions that stand alone. But the recurring characters, objects, and places, and the bigger story arc, make for a whole far greater than the sum of its parts.
The other huge plus is the quirkiness. Some of the puzzles are mental. As are the characters. Sam n Max are freelance police. Sam is a cynical dog. Max is a psychotic rabbit. The game was even more enjoyable because i related a lot to Sam, and my bro to Max. Plus 2 heads solved the puzzles faster. I was better suited to more obscure ones, my bro to violent ones!
Downsides? Well a couple of situations involved no progress for ages due to missing a tiny object or an extremely obscure puzzle [rat cannon, i'm looking at you]. Also, given the graphic simplicity, the game engine was inexplicably slow in places. Indeed, it crashed a few times.
All in all a great experience, that upped the ante with each episode. We were almost sad to finish it. I'd like to play other games by the same guys that are downloadable. But at £7 an episode that's too costly when i got Sam n Max on dvd for under £15 with 6 episodes.
